FAT AFRO LATIN JAZZ CATS

The Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats is a pre professional youth orchestra administered by the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance. Now beginning its fourth year, this New York City all-star youth big band is under the direction of Arturo O’Farrill at the famed Greenwich Village jazz club Fat Cat. The orchestra includes some of the city’s finest young musicians who hail from all over the five boroughs. They perform classic works from the Latin jazz repertory as well as new works by members of the group. The Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats rehearse weekly on Sunday afternoons and perform at Fat Cat and other venues around New York City. Participation in the orchestra prepares students for advanced music study at specialized colleges and conservatories. Previous members have been accepted to schools such as Hart Conservatory of Music, Manhattan School of Music and the Music Conservatory at SUNY at Purchase, New York.

ABOUT THE AFRO LATIN JAZZ ALLIANCE

The nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) was established by Arturo O’Farrill in 2007 to promote Afro Latin Jazz through a comprehensive array of performance and educational programs. It provides institutional support for the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and offers instruction to young students. ALJA introduces Afro Latin jazz to new audiences, and maintains a world-class collection of Latin Jazz musical scores and recordings. ALJA programs celebrate Latino contributions to American jazz and explore the rich diversity of Jazz in the Americas. The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance is a partner project of the Fund for the City of New York and maintains an office at the Harlem School of the Arts – Herb Alpert Center where O’Farrill and the ALJO are artists-in-residence.
