Bangladeshi Building Collapses

Submitted by ub on

An eight-story building has collapsed on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital, killing at least 275 people and injuring more than 1,000.

This building housed several garment factories. This tragedy comes on the heels of a deadly fire in the Tazreen Fashions garment factory last November that killed nearly 120 people, and several other fires since that time.

This accident mandates the need to address safety conditions in Bangladesh’s garment sector in a way that helps Bangladeshi workers and respects their basic rights.

Locals are urging that anyone responsible for these deaths be prosecuted to fullest extent of the law. It appears that construction workers had violated construction codes on this collapsed building.
