COASTAL FLOOD HAZARD

News

COASTAL FLOODING MAY OCCUR WITH THE SUNDAY MORNING HIGH TIDE CYCLE...

.LOW PRESSURE MOVING OFF THE MID ATLANTIC COAST TONIGHT AND TOWARD
EASTERN LONG ISLAND BY EARLY SUNDAY MORNING WILL GENERATE STRONG
EASTERLY WINDS AS IT INTERACTS WITH STRONG HIGH PRESSURE TO THE
NORTHEAST. THESE WINDS WILL PRODUCE A STORM SURGE...WITH WATER
LEVELS AS HIGH AS 2 TO 3 FEET ABOVE ASTRONOMICAL HIGH TIDE LEVELS
THAT COULD CAUSE MINOR COASTAL FLOODING IN SPOTS. IF THE STORM
MOVES MORE SLOWLY THAN EXPECTED...THE DEGREE OF FLOODING COULD
BE GREATER AND AND/OR MORE WIDESPREAD THAN EXPECTED.

* LOCATIONS...SHORELINES OF LONG ISLAND SOUND...PECONIC AND
GARDINERS BAYS...THE LONG ISLAND SOUTH SHORE BAYS AND NEW YORK
HARBOR.

* TIDAL DEPARTURES...2 TO 3 FEET ABOVE ASTRONOMICAL HIGH TIDE
LEVELS.

* TIMING...WITHIN AN HOUR EITHER SIDE OF THE TIMES OF ASTRONOMICAL
HIGH TIDES. ON SUNDAY MORNING THE APPROXIMATE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE
WILL BE BETWEEN...
9 AND 10 AM ON WESTERN LONG ISLAND SOUND AND PECONIC AND
GARDINERS BAYS...
8 AND 9 AM ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF SUFFOLK COUNTY...
5 AND 7 AM ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF NASSAU COUNTY AND ALONG
NEW YORK HARBOR.

* IMPACTS...MINOR FLOODING OF ALONG SHORE AREAS. THE MAJORITY OF
ROADS SHOULD REMAIN PASSABLE...WITH ONLY ISOLATED CLOSURES. THERE
IS NO SIGNIFICANT THREAT TO LIFE...AND ANY IMPACT ON PROPERTY
SHOULD BE MINIMAL.
