Memorial Day marks the start of the summer and therefore pool season. But before you jump into your local pool, you may want to think twice, or even three times. Diarrhea outbreaks linked to cryptosporidium parasites in pools and water parks increased at least two-fold in a couple of years. The parasite caused at least 32 outbreaks in 24 states last year, compared with 16 nationwide in 2014, but there are ways to help protect yourself: Don’t swallow swimming water, give kids frequent bathroom breaks and, make sure to shower before and after swimming.
