Drug Tests For Welfare Recepients

The Michigan State House has passed legislation that requires families to show more than need in order to qualify for government sponsored welfare benefits. One portion of the legislation, known as Bill 4388 would take away benefits from families with truant kids.

House Bill 4118 would require welfare recipients to take a drug test. If they failed the test they would have to get in treatment, then get clean in order to keep getting benefits.

Some critics say the government is unfairly targeting the poor, and point out that corporate leaders bailed out from poverty aren't asked to take drug tests. However,
supporters of both measures say they will assist these people to get out of poverty. The reasoning is that you are less likely to suffer from poverty if you prioritize education and live a sober life.
