Goose Brings His Stories to Cooperstown

Submitted by Admin on

Thirty-five years ago, Goose Gossage stood on the mound at Fenway Park and wrapped up one of the great comeback stories in baseball history.

Just days after the anniversary of that legendary one-game playoff, Gossage will share those stories and more at a special Voices of the Game program at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Gossage, a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee and author of 310 saves, was one of the most fearsome relievers of his era and helped define the role of the modern closer. He pitched two and two-thirds innings of relief on Oct. 2, 1978 to preserve the Yankees’ 5-4 win in their showdown against the Red Sox for the American League East title – capping the Bronx Bombers’ rally from 14 games down in mid-July.

The Yankees went on to capture the World Series as Gossage added two more wins and another save in the postseason.

Tickets for the Oct. 12 Voices of the Game event are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12-and-under and go on sale today for participants in the Museum’s Membership Program. Members can call 607-547-0397 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET to reserve seats. Any remaining tickets are made available to the general public on Oct. 7.

The program, which will also feature a special recognition for 30-year supporters of the Hall of Fame’s Membership Program, will be held against the backdrop of Columbus Day Weekend in Cooperstown, featuring gorgeous scenes along the shores of Otsego Lake during one of the season’s peak weekends for fall colors.
