So many of us complain that we eat too much for the holidays. The sweets, the appetizers, and main courses overflow and many quickly rush to join a gym to get the weight off.
But there are too many people in our city who go to bed hungry and do not know where their next meal is coming from. Just think of all the food you see thrown away every day! When NYC Councilman Jimmy Vacca grew up he and his sisters were always told by their parents that they should never throw away God's food. He remembers his mother serving peas with dinner. His sisters and he hated peas! Well, the next morning for breakfast they had peas and eggs. And for dinner, peas and macaroni. They understood clearly that, one way or another, they were going to eat the peas!
But there are those among us who do not have the luxury of deciding WHAT they are going to eat, but are thankful for any meal at all. And, do not fool yourself, some of these very people live in OUR community.
So, go through your cabinets and head off to a food pantry because your donation can make a difference. Call Councilman Vacca's office if you want to know of the pantry nearest you or visit the pantry run by the Jewish Community Council of Pelham Parkway located at 2157 Holland Ave, between Pelham Parkway South and Lydig Ave (aka Mother Teresa Way). They are open Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 3:00 and can be reached at 718-792-4744.
No one in our city should go hungry. The holiday season is a special time for all of us and don't ever forget that giving is always better than receiving.
The Councilman wishes everyone a HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
"Let me take this opportunity to wish all of you and your families a very happy and joyful Christmas Season. Make sure to take the opportunity of the holidays to show those you love that you care and to do something meaningful for those less fortunate. You all have my very best wishes for a happy, healthy, and successful New Year"
