Training Grants: Working with the Department of Small Business Services through a new $500,000 training grant program for the media industry, businesses will compete for grants that cover up to 70 percent of training costs. The grants will help media businesses train employees in cutting-edge technologies and software, allowing them to boost their competitiveness and enter new markets. Businesses will have the opportunity to work with a training specialist to craft a proposal that meets their needs. Applications will be rated on the business’s capacity to carry out the project successfully, the impact on the business’s bottom line, and employees’ new skills and increased wages. Strategic Steps for Growth: The New York City Department of Small Business Services, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, and the Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business has launched the first class of the Strategic Steps for Growth Media and Entertainment program, expanded for small business owners in the media and entertainment industry. Using an award-winning curriculum developed by Interise, Strategic Steps for Growth is a nine-month executive business management program that allows small business owners to use their own business as a case study and connects them to a support network of business advisers, other entrepreneurs, and public/private-sector resources to help their business grow.Applications are currently closed. “Made in NY” Media Center: The City of New York has announced that the Independent Filmmaker Project will develop and operate the “Made in NY” Media Center, a centralized hub for the local media industry to collaborate and grow. The “Made in NY” Media Center will provide workspace, educational programs in partnership with General Assembly and networking events for content creators and entrepreneurs.
