Tomorrow at 10A, NYC Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe will join President of the New York Junior League Lisa Hathaway Stella, Assembly Member Brian Kavanagh, Council Member Rosie Mendez, and Chair of the Community Board 3 Parks Committee Thomas Yu to thank NYJL volunteers and invite the community to celebrate the completion of this project. A tree will be planted at the event as part of the City’s MillionTreesNYC efforts. There will also be activities including a musical performance, face painting, and track and field relays.

Throughout five weekends in April and May, the NYJL’s Playground Improvement Project committee teamed up with approximately 1,000 volunteers, including NYJL members, NYC Parks employees, corporate sponsors, service organizations, neighborhood residents and children. Together, they worked to restore East River Park’s playgrounds, athletic courts, and gardens.

Collectively, the volunteers planted more than 160 annuals, 725 perennials, 1,000 shrubs, and nine trees as part of MillionTreesNYC. Thousands of dollars and over 12,500 volunteer hours were contributed to ensure the success of this latest Playground Improvement Project.

The New York Junior League is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The Playground Improvement Project is their signature community project. Since 1992, they have worked to help provide bright, vibrant and safe place spaces for New York City’s children.
