PS 17 HISTORICAL LANDMARK

Submitted by ub on

Reportedly, Iit was initially named PS 102 and then P.S. 17. It is located at 190 Fordham Street, and now the home of City Island Nautical Museum, City Island Community Center, worldwide headquarters for City Island Images, and 15 other luxury condos. This Georgian Revival-style building will be designated a landmark and officially presented at a City Council hearing in March.

Originally opened late in 1898 with a few hundred students, eight classrooms and playrooms, this building was envisioned and executed by architect C.B.J. Snyder NYC School Buildings Superintendent.

Longtime City Island residents picture below - Robert Branizza (R) and Russell Schaller (L) both recall wonderful and positive memories while going to school at PS 17.

However, in 1905, P.S. 102 became P.S. 17 until 1975, until the building was vandalized. All students were moved into a new location on City Island Avenue. P.S. 175 continues to serve the community as the City Island neighborhood grammar school.
