RIP Liu Xiaobo

Submitted by ub on

China's cancer-stricken Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo has died while in Chinese parole. As the 61-year-old democracy advocate's liver function continued to deteriorate, he suffered from "shock and organ failure", according to the First Hospital of China Medical University in the northeastern city of Shenyang. He was admitted last month from prison due to late-stage liver cancer. He passed away from complications of liver cancer.

The former professor of literature at Beijing Normal University wrote about Chinese society and culture with a focus on democracy and human rights. He was jailed for 21 months after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre for his role in supporting students who had taken part in the peaceful protests.
