SUPER ATHLETE AT 64

Submitted by ub on

At age 64, super athlete and long distance swimmer Diana Nyad has become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a protective shark cage, through the treacherous Florida straights all the way to a Key West beach this afternoon at 2 p.m, nearly 53 hours after jumping into the ocean in Habana for her fifth try in 35 years.

CNN had a great position to record Diana Nyad completing her swim, but didn't get the shot. Nor did CBS, NBC, ABC or Fox. Huh?

Veteran broadcaster Linda Ellerbee says this is unacceptable "In sports (along with in so many other areas) there has been gender specific in many places and for many years. There is tons of research supporting the fact that women in sports are not treated equally by the media. As a media vet, i can tell you that he nets have money to pay for helicopters and boats. Either they didn't think she would make it, or they didn't think it was worth the cost."

"I got three messages," an exhausted and ecstatic Diana Nyad told her well wishers who were there to witness this amazing nautical feat. "One is we should never ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it's a team,"
