March 2, 2013 - 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Live a karate demonstration

Al Oerter Recreation Center Queens, 131-40 Fowler Avenue, NYC, NY

In honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, NYC Parks will host a fun day of free fitness, sports, and social activities exclusively for girls and women. The event will also celebrate the conversion of a lightly used multipurpose room into a cardiac-room, complete with $77,000 worth of fitness equipment.

Girls and women are invited to enjoy athletic and health activities, including sports clinics and fitness demos. Take part in a raffle and win prizes! Ten year old karate champion, Destiny Vergara, will join the event to speak about her experiences, and show off her skills.

In order to provide an optimal workout experience at Al Oerter Recreation Center, NYC Parks has taken a fresh look at the space, redesigning the layout and investing $77,000 in new fitness equipment. The fitness facilities now feature a brand new low impact room and a redesigned strength room, with new equipment. The layout of the strength room provides more free space to enhance the workout experience, and it now contains an improved strength circuit targeting different parts of the body. By making these changes, the Center is able to expand its offerings to accommodate beginner, intermediate and advanced exercisers.
