A collage of the great journalists we've lost this week. David Carr of the New York Times (upper left) was our guide to the turbulent media-scape.

Bob Simon of CBS (upper right) was part of the elite cadre of '60 Minutes' correspondents and had a ton of awards to his credit.

Ned Colt of NBC (lower left) reported from Europe, the Middle East and Asia; went on to work on refugee issues for the International Rescue Committee and the UN.

POSITIVE NEWS

The 24/7 news cycle is all about crises, corruption, dysfunction, and all too often often with endless human tragedies. But journalism should be more balanced, complete with positive news.

There needs to be stories about human potential and people who are making a difference by treating others how they'd like to be treated and how they're rising to the occasion.

This TED Talk is a few months old, but is still very relevant today. http://youtu.be/zPy0xnymGR0

Lawsuits have been filed against MIT and Harvard University for failing to provide closed captioning in online teaching materials, which claim to be in violation of federal anti-discrimination laws.

The lawsuits were filed by the National Association of the Deaf, and it seeks an injunction requiring that closed captioning be provided for all online materials.

These institutions for higher learning provide free online educational resources, and through membership in edX, which offers dozens of MOOCs to students worldwide.

Growing @ BBG

With an estimated global audience of millions, the networks funded by US Broadcasting Board of Governors draw an audience of 215 million people each week. This includes noteworthy increases in competitive media markets, on television and online.

Growth in the television audience shows an increase of 14 million from 2013. This is in part due to a successful affiliate strategy, through which BBG partners with more than 2,300 media outlets worldwide. These partnerships bring the BBG more than half of its overall global audience.

Which Areas Should Women Shave?

Submitted by Admin on

The responses of women and men vary when it comes to body hair. How do they felt about shaving, not shaving, and about other women's relative hairiness. When Britney Spears shaved her head in public, she unleashed a tide of speculation about her mental state. Why does a woman cutting off her hair still have such power to create a buss? My personal preference about shaving hair is nowhere... NATURAL

This is not only Friday the13th, but weather forecasters are warning the wind chill factor may bring the NYC area temperatures down to -13 degrees. Beware and be very careful.

Friday the thirteenth has long been considered as a day of bad luck in various countries for many years.
However, contrary to popular belief that Friday 13 is an unlucky day, it is actually regarded as a lucky day by many people and in some cultures.

Media Mavens

As media mavens, these trusted individuals shared their unique knowledge with others. However, this week, TV viewers learned about the developing saga and exodus of two media kingpins and previously moored anchors, who by now know all too well that the most reliable strategy, which works best is to keep it simple and reliable.

After delivering the news to 10 million television viewers for years, Brian Williams appeared reliable and concise. But when it came to telling his personal story of a helicopter attack, he got got it wrong and repeated it over and over until he eventually got caught. When he admitted it, the top brass at the peacock network suspended him without pay.

Then comes Jon Stewart, who for years has reigned over The Daily Show. His response was to quickly comment and say “Finally someone is being held to account for misleading America about the Iraq War!”. At about the same time, Stewart announced he would be stepping down from his popular satirical program.

CBS Correspondent Bob Simon died during a NYC car crash tonight. The Bronx native was a passenger inside a livery car, which was traveling southbound on 12th Ave. at W. 30 St. when it rear-ended a Mercedes-Benz driven by a 23-year-old man and suddenly slammed into a median this evening.

The 73 year old journalist was rushed to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, where he died.

Simon, Peter Bluff, Roberto Alvarez and Juan Caldera were arrested in Iraq by Sadam Hussein military during the gulf war and accused of being CIA agents before they were eventually released.
