MTA Makes Some New Yorkers Angry

It was actually the very first time in one hundred year history of New York City’s 24-hour subway system, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority shut down some sections of our train lines overnight hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. four nights in a row to allow workers to clean up the miles of tracks.

Nearly one thousand workers cleaned roughly three miles of tracks and completed hundreds of tasks that they needed to finish. Back to normal? We'll see.

U.S. Restores Relations With Myanmar

While U.S. Representative Joseph Crowley visited Myanmar, that country has received a favorable overture in response to their political reforms.

Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) met with families of political prisoners in Rangoon as part of his travel to Burma. During the meeting, Crowley listened to the concerns of the families and expressed his strong support for the unconditional release of all political prisoners.

Our representative is the first member of Congress to meet with families of political prisoners held in Burma.

City Island Images - Updated and Upgraded

So far this year, City Island Images seems to be a lightning rod for gossip and news developments. We have heard from professional journalists and local citizens alike. People like to talk, and it appears to cimages.me that most feel like it is much easier to talk about others than it is to talk about yourself.

Within days of returning to City Island following a trip out of town, we were advised of several developments and news stories:

City Island Images wishes to point out that although the authenticity of a video, which includes graphic images has caused an international controversy has yet to be verified, the US Marine Corps says it is investigating this matter.

Putnam Trail: NYC Public Design

The NYC Public Design Commission recommended a STONE DUST surface for the Putnam Trail in May 2010. The Van Cortlandt Park Administrator Margot Perron said that, “strong support for the paved (asphalt) surface by community bike riders was sufficient in judgment of DPR” to overturn the qualified recommendation of the NYC Public Design Commission. Is this really how decisions are made now? Who are these “community bike riders” who make the decisions for the entire community regarding how $2.5 million in taxpayers funds are spent?

NYC Councilman Vacca On The Move...

On Friday, January 27, Vacca will sponsor a no-cost mammography van in front of his District Office at 3040 E. Tremont Avenue from 9 AM to 4 PM. Local women who are age 40 and over who have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months should call 1-877-628-9090 to make an appointment. The visit is co-sponsored by the American Italian Cancer Foundation, with medical services provided by Multi-Diagnostic Services. Early detection of breast cancer can save lives. Appointments will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.
