TORNADO = DEATH + DESTRUCTION

An enormous tornado a mile wide, with 200 mph. winds ripped through Oklahoma City suburbs on Monday. This twister flattened neighborhoods and crushed a school, which killed at least 24 people.

Officials say the death the toll is expected to rise. The city of Moore was heavily hit, and public safety officials continue their search for survivors.

Tornadoes are difficult to predict. This documentary from NASA is a good introduction to how they work.

BRONX PROTEST

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and NYC Council Member Melissa Mark-Viverito have sent a letter to the company behind “Real Bronx Tours,” urging them to change the tone and content of their tours of the Bronx.

As reported in New York Post, “Real Bronx Tours” they feel that current offerings are disrespectful to the borough, feature numerous inaccuracies about the Bronx and include a stop at a food pantry.

Yahoo has announced its biggest deal so far. CEO Marissa Mayer just purchased the blogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion. It is a move designed to attract younger users into Yahoo, which is a struggling Internet pioneer.

The two firms confirmed weekend reports of the tie-up, a deal which keeps the fast-growing Tumblr largely independent while integrating technology and advertising opportunities.

May 20, 1873
Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis receive patent for blue jeans. On this day in 1873, San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Reno, Nevada, tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world's most famous garments: blue jeans. Born Loeb Strauss in Buttenheim, Bavaria, in 1829, the young Strauss immigrated to New York with his family in 1847 after the death of his father. By 1850, Loeb had changed his name to Levi and was working in the family dry goods business, J. Strauss Brother & Co. In early 1853, Levi Strauss went west to seek his fortune during the heady days of the Gold Rush.

May 21, 1881
American Red Cross founded. In Washington, D.C., humanitarians Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons found the American National Red Cross, an organization established to provide humanitarian aid to victims of wars and natural disasters in congruence with the International Red Cross. Barton, born in Massachusetts in 1821, worked with the sick and wounded during the American Civil War and became known as the "Angel of the Battlefield" for her tireless dedication. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln commissioned her to search for lost prisoners of war, and with the extensive records she had compiled during the war she succeeded in identifying thousands of the Union dead at the Andersonville prisoner-of-war camp.

Great Emigration departs for Oregon. A massive wagon train, made up of 1,000 settlers and 1,000 head of cattle, sets off down the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri. Known as the "Great Emigration," the expedition came two years after the first modest party of settlers made the long, overland journey to Oregon.

May 23, 1934
Police kill famous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. On this day in 1934, notorious criminals Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death by Texas and Louisiana state police while driving a stolen car near Sailes, Louisiana. Bonnie Parker met the charismatic Clyde Barrow in Texas when she was 19 years old and her husband (she married when she was 16) was serving time in jail for murder. Shortly after they met, Barrow was imprisoned for robbery. Parker visited him every day, and smuggled a gun into prison to help him escape, but he was soon caught in Ohio and sent back to jail. When Barrow was paroled in 1932, he immediately hooked up with Parker, and the couple began a life of crime together.
