This Week in History, September 1 - September 7

Sep 01, 1864
Atlanta falls to Union forces. On this day in 1864, Union Army General William Tecumseh Sherman lays siege to Atlanta, Georgia, a critical Confederate hub, shelling civilians and cutting off supply lines. The Confederates retreated, destroying the city's munitions as they went. On November 15 of that year, Sherman's troops burned much of the city before continuing their march through the South. Sherman's Atlanta campaign was one of the most decisive victories of the Civil War.

Sep 02, 1969
First ATM opens for business. On this day in 1969, America's first automatic teller machine (ATM) makes its public debut, dispensing cash to customers at Chemical Bank in Rockville Center, New York. ATMs went on to revolutionize the banking industry, eliminating the need to visit a bank to conduct basic financial transactions. By the 1980s, these money machines had become widely popular and handled many of the functions previously performed by human tellers, such as check deposits and money transfers between accounts. Today, ATMs are as indispensable to most people as cell phones and e-mail.

Sep 03, 1783
Treaty of Paris signed. The American Revolution officially comes to an end when representatives of the United States, Great Britain, Spain and France sign the Treaty of Paris on this day in 1783. The signing signified America's status as a free nation, as Britain formally recognized the independence of its 13 former American colonies, and the boundaries of the new republic were agreed upon: Florida north to the Great Lakes and the Atlantic coast west to the Mississippi River.

Sep 04, 1886
Geronimo surrenders. On this day in 1886, Apache chief Geronimo surrenders to U.S. government troops. For 30 years, the mighty Native American warrior had battled to protect his tribe's homeland; however, by 1886 the Apaches were exhausted and hopelessly outnumbered. General Nelson Miles accepted Geronimo's surrender, making him the last Indian warrior to formally give in to U.S. forces and signaling the end of the Indian Wars in the Southwest.

Sep 05, 1836
Sam Houston elected as president of Texas. On this day in 1836, Sam Houston is elected as president of the Republic of Texas, which earned its independence from Mexico in a successful military rebellion. He was born in Virginia in 1793, but Houston moved with his family to rural Tennessee after his father's death; as a teenager, he ran away and lived for several years with the Cherokee tribe. Houston served in the War of 1812 and was later appointed by the U.S. government to manage the removal of the Cherokee from Tennessee to a reservation in Arkansas Territory. He practiced law in Nashville and from 1823 to1827 served as a U.S. congressman before being elected governor of Tennessee in 1827.

Sep 06, 1915
First tank produced. On this day in 1915, a prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. Little Willie was far from an overnight success. It weighed 14 tons, got stuck in trenches and crawled over rough terrain at only two miles per hour. However, improvements were made to the original prototype and tanks eventually transformed military battlefields. The British developed the tank in response to the trench warfare of World War I. In 1914, a British army colonel named Ernest Swinton and William Hankey, secretary of the Committee for Imperial Defence, championed the idea of an armored vehicle with conveyor-belt-like tracks over its wheels that could break through enemy lines and traverse difficult territory. The men appealed to British navy minister Winston Churchill, who believed in the concept of a "land boat" and organized a Landships Committee to begin developing a prototype. To keep the project secret from enemies, production workers were reportedly told the vehicles they were building would be used to carry water on the battlefield (alternate theories suggest the shells of the new vehicles resembled water tanks). Either way, the new vehicles were shipped in crates labeled "tank" and the name stuck.

The always say the opposite of whatever he says
If he likes anything, they hate it.
Even if it was their idea in the first place.

So he doesn't necessarily NOT want to do it.
They definitely WANT to use up some missiles bullets etc so their friends make money.
He just wants to do the same thing they want to do.

So what ever they say he will go with it.
Really what he is trying to achieve is being on the same SIDE as they are on ANY thing.

He is pulling the rug right out from under them.
They wont easily be able to bad mouth him and lie about it.

AMERICAS CUP: FROM FLINSTONES TO FACEBOOK

Submitted by ub on

Of all the sailboats built on City Island, many led a 110-year string of two dozen successful races to defend the America's Cup. There was Magic, an 84-foot schooner rebuilt in the David Carll Shipyard in 1869, and Freedom, which was built at the Minneford Shipyard back in 1980.

From 1903 to 1958 race participants relied on sails made by Ratsey & Lapthorn on City Island, doing business from 1900 to 1982. But in 1983, when City Island was not connected to America’s Cup, the US first lost the trophy.

The City Island Nautical Museum will host an exhibit reception and presentation on Sunday, September 15, the day of final race 11* 1:10 pm PT, final race 12* 2:10 pm PT. The local distinguished guest will be boat captain, photographer extraordinaire, as well as proud City Islander Dick Sadler. Dick is the youngest son of the former president of the City Island Historical Society, the late and great Capt. Ed Sadler. Dick enjoys having been the only City Islander working on a boat crew that won America’s Cup. He’ll reminisce about his experiences as well as on working for Ted Turner.

A renowned international event, America's Cup has delivered its shares of flops, but one aspect of this 34th race that has many folks raving is their broadcast coverage. Event organizers are making America's Cup a broadcast-friendly event in order to appeal to the masses. For example, to capture all the action these boats have seven cameras and 14 on-board microphones to document each crew. Three helicopters give an aerial view, while on the water two cameras follow the action on chase-boats.

Steps for Heartburn

Submitted by ub on

Heartburn, that uncomfortable burning sensation that radiates up the middle of the chest, is the most common digestive malady. It’s the result of a condition known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), often called reflux, in which stomach acid surges upward from the stomach into the esophagus.

While heartburn should not be ignored, there are many stomach-soothing steps you can try before going to a doctor. These can help cool your symptoms and prevent bigger problems later on.

Eat smaller meals, but more often. A full stomach puts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a valve-like muscle that keeps stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus.

Eat in a slow, relaxed manner. Wolfing down your food fills your stomach faster, putting more pressure on the LES.

Remain upright after meals. Lying down increases pressure on the LES, which makes acid reflux more likely.

Avoid late-night eating. Eating a meal or snack within three hours of lying down to sleep can worsen reflux and heartburn symptoms. Leave enough time for the stomach to clear out.

Don’t exercise immediately after meals. Give your stomach time to empty; wait a couple of hours after eating before exercising.

Tilt your torso with a bed wedge. Raising your torso up a bit with a wedge-shaped cushion reduces the pressure on the LES and may ease nighttime heartburn. Wedges are available from medical supply companies. Don’t just prop your head and shoulders up with pillows, which can actually worsen reflux.

Stay away from carbonated beverages. They cause belching, which promotes reflux of stomach acid.

Find the foods that trigger your symptoms and avoid them. Some foods and drinks increase acid secretion, delay stomach emptying, or loosen the LES — conditions that set the stage for heartburn. Common offenders include fatty foods, spicy foods, tomatoes, garlic, milk, coffee, tea, cola, peppermint, and chocolate.

Chew sugarless gum after a meal. Chewing gum promotes salivation, which neutralizes acid, soothes the esophagus, and washes acid back down to the stomach. Avoid peppermint flavors, which may trigger heartburn.

Check your medications. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about drugs that can cause pain resembling heartburn. Some drugs, for example, can loosen the LES and cause acid reflux. Other drugs can cause inflammation of the esophagus.

Lose weight if you need to. Being overweight puts more pressure on the stomach (and the LES).
