Guadalupe Day

Submitted by ub on

On the 12th of December 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego and the day will be celebrated forever.

The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe is celebrated across the globe as millions of worshipers gather from community centers to churches and cathedrals.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a title for the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. The tradition and devotion arose from an encounter between Our Lady of Guadalupe and Juan Diego, a Mexican peasant of indigenous descent in the sixteenth century, to whom she appeared and spoke in his native language of Nahuatl.

She commissioned him to build a church in her honor. That church, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world today. Saint Juan Diego was canonized in 2002.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe holds great significance for all Catholics in The Americas and the new shrine enthroned to the images is the most visited shrine at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and elsewhere... etc.

After trying to keep the world at arm’s length for about two years, Yirong and I entered the local church so we could finally get more personal once again with The Virgin of Guadalupe and give thanks for keeping us safe.

This special saint has played a personal role for my mother and father who were married on this date and were longtime devotees. Then I had the good fortune and blessing to have visited her Basilica in Mexico City while on tour with Pope John Paul II, and years later my wife produced a beautiful needlepoint image that graces our home.
