U.S.-Russian Journalism Project

Submitted by ub on

City Island Images wishes to write a few stories about Russian Americans, who are living in NYC.

These specific subjects themes could include anti-corruption, child protection, community development, education and youth, environmental protection, gender equity, higher education, human rights and rule of law, media and access to information, migration and public health.

Ideally, we would like to focus on how the two countries are dealing with the problems of smoking cessation, domestic violence, obesity or waste management.... etc.

US Congressman Crowley's Open Invitation

Dear Friends:

Last October, we became aware of just how vulnerable New York is to flooding. Given the reality of more frequent severe weather and floods, it is critical that homeowners know whether their property is at risk and needs to be insured.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) prepares flood-risk maps and runs the National Flood Insurance Program in order to prepare and protect homes and businesses against floods. The maps for the New York City area are being updated and preliminary flood maps should be released early this summer.

According to Pew Research figures, there are 11.1 million immigrants living illegally in the U.S. This is the group for whom proposed legislation would provide a path to citizenship for most.

If the cutoff date for being in this country is Dec. 31, 2011, then based on their latest published estimates for March 2011, all 11 million would be eligible to apply. Pew does not know how many will apply and certainly not all will qualify because there are other requirements beyond just having been in the country.
