BELDEN POINT PROJECT

It's about time because it took long enough. But if you believe NYC Parks this time, City Island's Belden Point capital project will soon create a small green space and plaza at the southern end of City Island Avenue including new pavement, benches, bollards, and railings.

Bronx county allocated $170,000 for this project, and NY State secured an additional $170,000 grant. The project has been awarded to a contractor, and a contract was registered on March 10. They are currently negotiating a start date with that contractor.

The construction of this new park has been 14 years in the making and was originally expected to begin back in 2012, but the project idea for the park at Belden Point was to clean up an area that is prone to debris. The idea for Belden Point Park came from a committee established in 1997 by then-Governor George Pataki.

Belden Point park, which will reportedly include a sitting area on the water with benches, plantings, and pavers. Four new street trees on City Island Avenue near the park - sandwiched between Tony’s Restaurant and Johnny’s Reef.

Some senior community residents have expressed their concern to City Island Images that there may not be adequate parking. Jackie Kyle and Russ Schaller both feel that there may not be enough free parking spaces available. We reached out to Tony and Johnny and we will just have to wait and see.
