The president of Spain's powerful northeastern region of Catalonia is calling for an independence referendum. This is the latest secession push in Europe and one of the most serious challenges to the Spanish state in recent years.

Journalist Justine Demirkol Maldonado, who now lives in Bercelona tells City Images "I think it's a far shot, especially after Scotland but the nationalistic sentiment sure makes waves."

Check out this amazing video to see the demonstrations they had on Sept. 11 supporting independence:

The Catalans in support of independence made a "v" for vote across two major thoroughfares in the city. You can only appreciate its gravity from the aerials shot from the news helicopters. It was really historic and many people here felt their participation was their duty. As the locals say "visca catalunya lliure!"
