The 39 year old Castro is currently serving his third term as mayor of San Antonio, Texas. Castro earned national attention in 2012 when he gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. he is considered one of a handful of Democrats who could serve as the party's vice presidential nominee in 2016, especially if Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the Democratic nomination for president.

Castro's mother was part of a movement in Texas that pushed for civil rights for Mexican-Americans. At 26, he became the youngest-ever member of San Antonio’s city council. He was elected mayor in 2009 and won reelection in 2011 with 80 percent of the vote.
