Happy Saint Patrick's Day

Submitted by ub on

St. Patrick's Day is a global celebration of Irish culture annually on March 17, including a massive NYC Parade.

Leprechauns are one reason you should wear green on St. Patrick's Day—or risk getting pinched! The tradition is tied to folklore that says wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, which like to squeeze anyone they can see.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
The splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
The firmness of the rock.

CUBA

A Cuban/Celtic connection. Irish migrants have been in Cuba since at least the early 1600s, As early as 1661. Born in County Meath, General Alejandro O'Reilly was tasked with the role of second corporal and sub-inspector of the armies in Cuba, making him the second-highest military authority on the island. He left a lasting impact on Cuban history.

O'Reilly's first-born son, Pedro Pablo, went on to form his own Cuban family. He married the Countess of Buenavista, the heiress of the Marchioness de Jústiz de Santa Ana. Their union represents a unique intersection of Irish and Cuban heritage that endures to this day.
