SUNY Days for Maritime

SUNY Chancellor, Nancy L. Zimpher officiated at the inauguration of SUNY Maritime College president, Rear Admiral Michael A. Alfultis, Ph.D.

A great leader never takes himself too seriously and the rear admiral set a fine example by referring to himself as a frustrated preacher during his short acceptance speech.

This inauguration was the culmination of a celebration for the investiture of Dr. Alfultis as the College’s 11th president, and of Maritime College’s 140th anniversary year.

This gorgeous coastline campus in The Bronx sponsored educational, historical and celebratory activities to honor its new president, as well as opportunities to embrace the campus’ time-honored traditions of Learning and Leadership.

SUNY Maritime College is the oldest and largest of our great nation's seven maritime academies. In 1874 by the Marine Society of the City of New York established SUNY Maritime as a four-year college, which offers a solid academic program coupled with a structured cadet life in the regiment for both men and women, or a civilian program.

Maritime offers undergraduate and graduate degrees with the option of either US Coast Guard license or intern programs, summer training cruises abroad, ROTC options, and 15 varsity athletic teams. The College is located in New York City on a beautiful 55-acre campus with some of the best views of the New York skyline, the East River, and the Long Island Sound.

Dr. Alfultis’ was appointment president of the campus at Fort Schuyler by the SUNY Board of Trustees.
