The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW), the world’s largest organization of business journalists, will conduct its 50th anniversary conference April 4-6 at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Recently, a suburban newspaper published the addresses of gun owners and WikiLeaks revealed a vast treasure trove of secret U.S. files. Where does the dividing line fall between privacy and the public interest? On Tuesday, April 9, the Deadline Club’s line-up of top experts in big data, media ethics and the First Amendment will debate the thorny issues related to secrecy, computer-assisted reporting, the Freedom of Information Act and more. Panelists include Bill Keller, a Pulitzer prize-winning New York Times columnist and the newspaper’s former top editor; Jennifer LaFleur, Director of the Computer Assisted Reporting, ProPublica; Jeff Jarvis, author of Public Parts: How Sharing in the Digital Age Improves the Way We Work and Live and Director of the CUNY Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism; Susan McGregor, Professor at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and former Senior News Graphics programmer at the Wall Street Journal Online; and Eve Burton, General Counsel at Hearst. Event: 2013 Penny Bender Fuchs Diversity Fellowship
When: October 9-12, 2013 (Deadline: April 15)
Where: Poynter Institute, St. Petersburg, FL
The Society for Features Journalism is committed to developing news-gathering staffs representative of the multicultural communities its members serve. Toward this goal, SFJ is sponsoring the Penny Bender Fuchs Diversity Fellowship Program for journalists of color in conjunction with its annual conference at the Poynter Institute. Programming will have heavy emphasis on multimedia, leadership and writing. Diversity fellows learn what’s happening in features departments nationwide while networking with outstanding journalists specializing in lifestyle coverage. Fellowships cover SFJ conference registration, airfare and hotel. Fellows will also receive a $300 stipend to be used toward conference-related expenses such as baggage and transportation fees and meals not covered by the conference. The fellowship is named in honor of the late Penny Bender Fuchs, a former executive director of SFJ who was a strong advocate of the fellows program. Fellows are asked to contribute to the conference by completing a project and presenting a short report to the group at the conclusion of the event.
Application must contain ALL of the following: Resume, Single-page essay explaining what you love about your job and how you have distinguished yourself in arts/features coverage at your news organization, Photo of yourself for conference program and SFJ Web site, Letter of recommendation.
Submit THREE work examples:
- For writers, three storytelling examples from print and-or online editions.
- For editors, three samples of sections or pages with comments on how stories were generated or edited.
- For copy editors, three headlines with stories attached, plus two stories with editing comments.
- For designers, three samples of single- or multi-page layouts.
- For journalists with online-only work, list Web links in your application letter. Include a short explanation of your role in site design and/or maintenance.

Event: The Deadline Club has Four $2,500 Journalism Student Scholarships Available

The Deadline Club scholarship program continues to grow—with $10,000 to give away this year. Last year, it raised the amount of money for each scholarship by 25 percent, to $2,500. This year, it has increased the total number of scholarships available from three to four—so there are more chances for talented journalism students to win one of these coveted awards. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a journalism or journalism-oriented communications program in the New York City metropolitan area. All applications, including supporting materials such as letters of recommendation, must be submitted via the scholarship website by the entry deadline of 11:59 p.m. on Friday, April 19. The Center for Responsive Politics' "Post-Election Payback" trainings aims to develop and nurture a more sophisticated level of media coverage by conducting three regional seminars that will train journalists to track campaign money's effects on policy outcomes and on hiring decisions in Congress and in the new administration. April 26 includes a panel discussion from 2:00-5:00 p.m. and reception from 5:00-7:00 p.m. April 27 includes two panel discussions (morning and afternoon), breakfast and lunch included. Event: ASJA’s 42nd Annual Writers Conference: Fire Up Your Writing Career

ASJA2013: Fire Up Your Writing Career includes two full days open to the public, offering dozens of educational sessions focused on issues and topics pivotal to freelance writers. There will also be several social events designed to encourage professional networking. Anyone with an interest in freelance writing, for any market or medium, will benefit from this extraordinary gathering of industry professionals. As one attendee, Fred Minnick, said of the 2012 event, “I feel like writer Superman after that conference!” Scores of sessions spread over two days cover topics of interest to freelance writers at all stages of their careers: just breaking in, scaling new heights, or keeping a good thing going. Attendees will choose from among 40 information-packed sessions on subjects including: finding new work, breaking in to new markets or genres, technology and social media topics, honing your craft skills, protecting yourself legally and financially, and even fiction topics. Personal mentoring is available, as well, allowing writers to get individualized career assistance on-site.

Event: NewsTrain, APME Journalism Training Program
When: April 29-30, 2013
Where: Prairie Capital Convention Center, Springfield, IL
NewsTrain, the signature on-site journalism training program of the Associated Press Media Editors, will make its first stop in its 10th anniversary year in Springfield, Ill. Workshops are being planned for April 29 and 30 at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Downtown Springfield. The APME-funded program makes four stops per year in the United States and Canada. Trainer Michael Roberts oversees NewsTrain and plans the workshops based on a needs assessment from a committee of journalists in the region of the host city. Programs are aimed at all levels of newsroom editors and managers, reporters, copy editors, visual journalists and online producers. College journalism educators and student journalists are also welcome. The cost is $75 for the two days of training. The hotel discount ends on April 7. Other workshops are being planned later this year in Seattle and Colorado
