DOCTOR STRANGELOVE

Submitted by ub on

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the war room!" Dr. Strangelove was cinema's most daring comedy up til that point: a no-holds-barred satire of the Cold War released barely a year after the Cuban missile crisis. It portrays the events leading up to a nuclear conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, at a time when such a possibility was very real. In particular, it mocks the military and political leaders who are supposed to prevent such a conflict from happening, highlighting their absurdity and ineptitude.

Peter Sellers plays three different roles in the film, including the titular Dr. Strangelove, a former Nazi scientist who advises the US President on how to survive a nuclear war. He's in absolute top form, resulting in uncountable laugh-out-loud moments, like when he responds to the President with, "Ja, mein Fuhrer!" Darkly comic and fearless, Dr. Strangelove still towers over comedy cinema today; a masterwork from a master storyteller.
