Welcome Fall Friday

Submitted by ub on

New York City metropolitan area residents woke up today to Fall-like temperatures as Autumn appears to have arrived just in time.

Following the horrific storms that caused widespread flooding and were responsible for dozens of deaths, that so-called third season of the year appears to be here and has arrived early. Autumn, also known as Fall in North American English, is one of the four temperate seasons. Outside the tropics, autumn marks the transition from summer to winter, in September Northern Hemisphere or March Southern Hemisphere, when the duration of daylight becomes noticeably shorter and the temperature cools considerably. Day length decreases and night length increases as the season progresses.

It officially begins on Wednesday, September 22 and it ends on Tuesday, December 21, but who is counting these days?

Astronomical: normally on 21 September or one day on either side, the first day of autumn (or spring earlier in the year) is marked by the equinox - when daylight and dark hours are equal. The word equinox comes from the Latin aequus equal and nox night. In 2021 the autumn equinox is on 22 September.

Meteorological: weather scientists split the year into quarters based on annual temperature cycles for statistical purposes. By this method, autumn starts on 1 September and lasts until 30 November.

This is a special time of the year when crops and fruits are gathered and leaves fall. Look for Turning leaves. When there’s less sunlight, trees stop producing chlorophyll, which they use to convert light into energy to grow. It’s chlorophyll that gives leaves their green color, so without it they begin to turn yellow, russet, or red.
