Box of Wires and Lights

Edward R. Murrow was a CBS broadcast journalist and war correspondent who gained prominence during WWII with a series of live radio broadcasts from the field. He recruited a team of war correspondents who came to be known as the Murrow Boys.

It was 60 years ago today, that #Murrow delivered his famous "wires and lights in a box" warning. The news is meant to inform as a public service, not a platform for empty programming filling individual valuable time.

As journalism is in danger from very different forces. All day, we'll be revisiting Murrow's prescient warning and imagining what he might say of today's attacks on journalism.

I'm a news and public affairs writer-producer, who believes in the importance of diversity and who has worked in front of as well as behind the camera. I began my career as a CEO, a communicator encouraging others and as a student-intern for The Washington Post, then went on to serve as NY Bureau Chief and Director of Network Operations for The Associated Press.

The following is a sample of some of my broadcast news reporting in two languages over the years.
