Castro earned national attention in 2012 when he gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. he is considered one of a handful of Democrats who could serve as the party's vice presidential nominee in 2016, especially if Hillary Rodham Clinton wins the Democratic nomination for president.

Castro's mother was part of a movement in Texas that pushed for civil rights for Mexican-Americans. At 26, he became the youngest-ever member of San Antonio’s city council. He was elected mayor in 2009 and won reelection in 2011 with 80 percent of the vote.
