Americans have been given six extra weeks to buy health coverage before facing a government penalty.

Those who buy health insurance through their new online marketplaces now have an extra six weeks to obtain required coverage before they incur a penalty.

This last minute announcement means that those who purchase coverage through the exchange will now have until March 31 to sign up for a specific plan, according to US Department of Health and Human Services.

The Obama administration claims that the extended deadline is unrelated to the multiple technical problems that keep spreading on www.HealthCare.gov.
