All News is Local
If you, your family, friends, and neighbors really care about the health of our democracy, our communities and believe that vigilant, quality local journalism is essential to our freedom, then do the following before its too late.
Be a loud and proactive journalism consumer. You might have plenty of access to local news but subscribe anyway. A reporter whose newsroom has been slashed made a convincing case for reader support saying subscribe as a statement of respect for the work of local journalists are doing. Be an engaged subscriber expressing what you expect as a reader. Do it in public as well as in private.
Assist individual journalists. Journalism companies are dead. Long live journalists. Take time to tell your local news that you appreciate what they’re doing. On top of all of the normal stress that comes with being a journalist these days. Help them report their stories. Be constructive in your criticism. Instead of destructive by stating can I introduce you to this new source who might be able to help you?
Support independent local news sites. Independent online news organizations have appeared all over the country to fill the gaps in local journalism left by the decline of newspapers and to give voice to communities that were never well-served by legacy media in the first place.
It is up to individual communities to take on the responsibility for their local news and information content as well as for investigative journalism. Every one of us, especially those with an understanding and commitment to a Free Press are responsible because these are essential to the local news ecosystem.
