The NYPD says a total of six people were struck by lightning, including a teenage boy who has died after fighting for his life hours.
The boy 13-year-old Carlos Ramos, died at Jacobi Hospital. He was enjoying the beach on an unusually hot summers day in NYC and wound up losing his life after 7 people were hit by lightning on Orchard Beach. Did they heed the warnings?
Beachgoers told reporters that the storm rolled in suddenly, followed quickly by lightning. The NY Parks Department said it made announcements over a public address system, telling people to clear the beach.
Others struck include A 41-year-old man, 33-year-old woman, 14-year-old boy, 13-year-old girl, 12-year-old girl, and a 5-year-old boy who are all listed in stable condition.
The storm came at the end of a sweltering day in New York City, where the heat index surged above 100 degrees. A heat advisory remains in effect.
