Many years ago, when I was a cub reporter and aspiring journalist in Miami, I was asked to produce a new Spanish-language program for a young up-and-coming musical star named Willy Chirino. The show was called Love Van and it was supposed to be a hipper version of American Bandstand and Soul Train, but unfortunately, it never caught on.

Cubans worldwide have been waiting for years until the Communist Castro regime collapses, and have been singing about it.

I was born in the Pearl of the Antilles around the middle of the century, but I am not able to return to my homeland under the present circumstances. The description was reportedly coined by a European artist whose 1873 book of illustrations bears the title "The Pearl of the Antilles."

Please, allow me to tell you a real story I personally lived through. Once upon a time, there were two republics. Both had constitutions, laws, civil rights, a government, a congress, and a court system of law. The people could assemble, associate, speak, and write with freedom.

But as the people became unsatisfied with their governments, they chose to support new officials and were fooled by fake images of religion and a better life before reality began to set in.

I was born in the Republic of Cuba, a nation comprising the main island as well as Isla de la Juventud and several minor archipelagos. Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean where the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean meet up.

Years later I was recruited by George HW Bush to lead the electronic Bay of Pigs named TV Martí which has been ineffective.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I should point out that I was born in Cuba. However, when I left my homeland there was no Internet.

Now more than 5 million cell phone users in Cuba have received free internet, in an eight-hour test before the government launched sales of the service.

For the first time since the 1950's, when The Castro Brothers launched their Cuban Revolution, the communist island will no longer have a Castro leading it.

The Cuban Revolution was an armed revolt conducted by Fidel and Raul Castro's revolutionary 26th of July Movement and its allies against the authoritarian government of another Cuban dictator named Fulgencio Batista.

The new president is 57-year-old Miguel Diaz-Canel. He is the chosen leader of an unfulfilled generation finally coming to maturity after the Castro era.

CUBA SÍ SEÑOR

As some of you may know, I was born in Cuba and would love to go back someday. Although I have not been allowed to return yet, the news and information content coming out of my beautiful island still interests me. I have now reached out to one government official to once again try to visit.
