With the death of US Senator Arlen Specter from Pennsylvania, it’s difficult to avoid a metaphor about American politics. Where have all those GOP moderates gone?

The late senator devoted his 30-year Senate career as a loyal Republican, but switched to the Democratic Party in April 2009. His partisan decision was partly about self-preservation, as Senator Specter faced defeat in the upcoming Republican primary against a conservative opponent who accused Specter of becoming too liberal for the GOP.

It was fifty years ago this week when our United States of America was on the brink of nuclear war. For 13 days in October 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis played out as the U.S. and the Soviet Union faced off over ballistic missile bases in Cuba.

Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner has landed safely on Earth after a 24-mile drop from the stratosphere in a daring jump, which may also have marked the world's first supersonic skydive. The near absence of air at this high altitude means he broke the speed of sound as he fell representing a velocity in excess of 690mph (1,110km/h).

Without a moment’s thought or the slightest pause, you can hear the difference between a violin and a clarinet, you can tell if a sound is coming from your left or right, and if it’s distant or near. And you can discriminate between words as similar as hear and dear, sound and pound.

Some call it Fall and others refer to it as Autumn, but any name you may wish to label this time of the year, it is delightful in so many ways.

This celestial season marks mother nature's transition from summer into winter, in September (Northern Hemisphere) or March (Southern Hemisphere) when the arrival of night becomes noticeably earlier.

Since summer is gone once again, it is the season when skies turn grey, some allow beautiful friendships to bloom and others turn inward, both physically and mentally.
