Not every movie critic is the same, but ours is one of the best. City Island Images is proud to present our major motion picture picks for last year. We hope you take time to watch these films and enjoy them as much as our fabulous film critic did.

Inside Llewyn Davis -- A surreal journey set within the folk music scene of the 1960s Village. Arguably the year's best film, and one of the Coen Brothers' best, it will surely be remembered for its score and the fine actors who sing those songs many of you remember well.

CITY ISLAND BRIDGE UPDATE

A public important public hearing has been scheduled on City Island avenue at P.S. 175 next Wednesday, Jan. 15 @ 7:30 p.m.

This may be the last opportunity locals will have to express their views on two ULURPs (Uniform Land Use Review Procedures) not relating to the height of the bridge, but to anchorage points in Pelham Bay Park and easements necessary for the planned construction of a temporary bridge and then a new City Island bridge.

The coldest day of their lives is how some described it as record temperatures have been set in more than a century.

It's colder than they could imagine others say, as the demand for heat reaches an all time high Firefighters are thawing out frozen fire hydrants, trains are stuck on tracks and folks losing electric power across the nation.

Lehman Center for the Performing Arts celebrates its 33rd season with the return of one the most important soul music groups of the past 40 years, THE O’JAYS, on Saturday, January 11th, 2014 at 8pm. Still going strong, the O’Jays epitomized the Philly sound with their smooth, rich harmonies, elaborate arrangements, and a touch of contemporary funk. With 24 Top Ten hits, including “Love Train,” “Backstabbers,” “Use Ta Be My Girl” and “For the Love of Money,” they have earned ten gold albums, with nine going platinum; ten number one hits; and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

Below-zero temperatures have pushed into the Northeastern region of the country. The  Polar Vortex has brought below-zero and possibly record-breaking cold weather not seen in many years to much of our entire nation.

Brutally cold weather looms for East Coast as icy conditions wreak havoc on U.S. Illinois and Indiana are seeing record breaking snow and sub zero temperatures.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today declared a state of emergency as a major winter storm has moved from the Midwest into Western New York and the Tug Hill Plateau region of the State. The State of Emergency covers the following counties: Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Monroe, Oneida, Orleans, Oswego, Wayne and Wyoming. A bitterly cold, arctic air mass brings dangerously-low temperatures and wind chills across the eastern U.S, with several areas approaching or exceeding record lows. Highs will be below 0F, with wind chill values as low as -20F to -50F. City Island Images spoke with journalists as far as the Midwest, where Indiana is reporting 10 below zero with 22 inches of snow on the ground

INCREASE MINIMUM WAGES

Employees at stores and fast food restaurants went on strike last year expressing their financial difficulties as a result of the minimum wage. The minimum wage is not high enough to cover basic costs of living in this country. Residents in NYC, Chicago, Detroit, LA, Boston, and St. Louis displayed their frustrations by picketing and or by striking.
