The year was 1900. Over three years after fire had destroyed the buildings on Ellis Island, a brand new station was built at the end of the year. Between then and the end of the decade, over six million immigrants were processed in that three acre island now known as The Gateway to America. The largest group was processed in 1907 with more than one million immigrants passed through.
Since then, there have been endless amounts of immigrants wishing to live in the land of freedom and justice for all. Europeans, Africans, Hispanics, Asians...etc..

Ahead of World Refugee Day, the United Nations refugee agency reported today that a record 800,000 people were forced to flee across borders last year, more than at any time since 2000.

The new refugees are part of a total of 4.3 million people who were newly displaced last year, owing to a string of major humanitarian crises that began in late 2010 in Côte d'Ivoire, and followed by others in Libya, Somalia, Sudan and elsewhere, according to Global Trends 2011, issued by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

On this day and every day, especially on Fathers Day, I recall my dear old dad and how much he loved my mom, and his island in the sun. I have fond memories and wonderful recollections of living with my family in El Bosque de La Habana inside the Republic of Cuba.

One fateful day, my family decided to leave after Castro nationalized the banks. I was a a young boy then, and even though I had no idea what was happening, since then I have always wanted to return, but I have never been successful.

Over one hundred fans turned out today to Bartow-Pell Manion to celebrate Fathers Day with a 1864-style Baseball game. The New York Mutuals played the Mineola Washingtons with old time rules, balls, and uniforms, but definitely no helmets or gloves.

Following the game, participants joined the fun and played a game of rounders with team members. There were also free house tours and a raffle for the game ball.
