Al Capone was born in New York, on January 17, 1899. Many gangsters came from impoverished backgrounds, but this was not the case for Capone. Big Al was from a professional family. His father was one of the thousands of Europeans who arrived in New York in 1894.
Al Capone grew up to become one of the most infamous American gangsters before being sent to prison in 1934 for a tax evasion conviction, he had amassed a personal fortune estimated at $100 million as the head of the crime syndicate.
