The Greek government says it can not repay a one and a half billion euros ($1.9 billion) debt to the International Monetary Fund due today. This dangerous move could amount to default and increase fears the country could fall out of the euro currency bloc.

WAIT A LEAP SECOND

Submitted by ub on

Back in 1967 clocks went atomic, and human timekeeping was dependent of the earth’s rotation. The problem is, the planet is slowing down and clocks are not.

So every few years, to get everything back in sync, scientists add a second. They’ve done it 25 times since 1972. The last time was 2012, but that was on a weekend. June 30 will be the first leap second during trading hours since markets went electronic.

Leap seconds are added to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) - and clocks worldwide - in order to compensate for the slowing of the Earth's rotation.

CAMERA DAY

Today is Camera Day, so go and take some photos while the sun is shining. Remember, photographers take photos with cameras.

Joseph Nicephore Niépce (1765-1833) is credited with producing the first successful photograph in June 1827.

Above is the first known photograph. There is little merit in the photo other than that fact. It is difficult to interpret; the building is on the left, a tree a third in from the left, and a barn immediately in front. The exposure lasted eight hours, so the sun had time to move from east to west, appearing to shine on both sides of the building.

20 cm x 16.5 cm, Niepce called this a "heliograph" and it is believed to be and image of the courtyard outside his house. The current belief is that he used the lens of a crude camera and a pewter plate with a few drops of bitumen (a tar like substance) on it and exposed the plate for eight hours. It will be on display in a sealed enclosure filled with inert gas at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin beginning in 2003.

The digital reproduction is a link to another digital reproduction of higher resolution that depicts the original photograph, "View from the Window at Le Gras." This photograph is owned by the Harry Ransom Center for the Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin, and was analyzed in 2002 by the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

The first one was previously shot in the heat and killed. The second NY prisoner, David Sweat has been captured. He is one of two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum security New York prison earlier this month.

Area residents are breathing a sigh of relief, but most Americans wonder why it took three weeks?

RIP CAPTAIN LEN GOLD

Leonard Gold, Captain, USAAC - Retired US Air Corps Decorated Fighter Pilot passed away today, following a long and distinguished career. His granddaughter Diana told me he died in peace, after an active 95 years.

City Images had the distinct honor of interviewing and getting to know this gentle warrior. He also took time to speak to students at a couple of my college classes and these young people were as impressed with him as I was. Lenny even took time to attend my City Island wedding and reception. Since we met, we enjoyed each others company socially, until the very end.
