On the East Coast, the biggest snowfall event of the season thus far is wrapping up for the Mid-Atlantic and will persist until early Wednesday for southern New England. The developing surface low responsible for this plethora of snowfall is forecast to develop into a strong ocean storm over the Canadian maritime. The tightening pressure gradient will result in gusty winds in addition to the snow, thus causing wind chills to plummet.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced that its regional railroads – Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road are reducing service, as snow accumulations make operating trains difficult.
This is aimed at preventing trains from becoming stranded in accumulated snow, and to allow personnel to concentrate resources on trains that will continue to operate.
The LIRR will reduce service on a branch-by-branch basis, consistent with its policy to curtail or suspend service if snow accumulations reach 10-13 inches.
NY Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has declared a state of emergency as a major winter storm moves across the New York City metropolitan area.
The State of Emergency covers the following counties: Suffolk, Nassau, Richmond, Kings, Queens, New York, Bronx, Westchester and Rockland.
Cuomo also activated the State Emergency Operations Center to monitor the major winter storm that is expected to bring moderate to heavy snow and strong winds to Long Island, New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley, and usher in extremely cold temperatures statewide.

The Voice of America is cracking after more than seventy years in existence and no one appears to be able to fix it. Over the past 25 years, the VOA has been having trouble with it's voice. Its been cracking much like it would when a child hits puberty. This is another example of our overspending government inaction.
VOA is a taxpayer-funded U.S. government-run foreign policy media organization charged by Congress with providing news about America and the world to international audiences, many of which cannot get uncensored news from their own media.
The Port Authority claims to be ready to tackle winter’s latest blast of snow, which is projected to begin tomorrow morning and continue until Wednesday morning.
The agency says it is prepared to deploy extra staff and has assembled snow equipment to handle what forecasters say could be significant snow and bitter cold temperatures at the Port Authority’s airports, tunnels, bridges, PATH system and seaport.
Arctic cold front moves across the region this evening, and then a wave of low pressure passes south and east of Long Island Tuesday through Wednesday.
A series of low pressure systems will move through the Great Lakes and northeast states, each sending a reinforcing cold front across the area through the upcoming days. Some areas could get almost a foot of snow.
Tonight: NW winds 15 to 20 kt with occasional gusts up to 25 kt diminishing to 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt after midnight. Seas 2 to 3 ft this evening...then 1 ft or less. Scattered flurries early this evening.
Venus had a reputation among the gods as being the most beautiful of all and possessing the secret to love and fulfillment. She ruled over the arts and sciences as well as war and conquest. Sumerian priests composed hymns in her honor. The ancient Mayans aligned doorways and windows of their buildings to capture her vibrations. Julius Caesar even dedicated a magnificent temple to her patronage. Who could resist her? And why would you want to, anyway?
A helicopter may be seen flying at low altitudes over northern New Jersey and New York City from January 21-27, 2014, while aerial surveys are conducted in advance of Super Bowl XLVIII.
Flyovers will occur only during daylight hours and they are estimated to take about three days to complete. This a normal part of security and emergency preparedness. Photos of the helicopter and flight areas are attached.
