American Xenophobia?

Madness towards Mexicans and Muslims may lead to Facism. It would appear that our descent into irrationality has not yet hit its limit but getting close and it could have dangerous consequences.

The definition of XENOPHOBIA is fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign. How can this be when our country is all about the multicultural melting pot. The American story has in large part been written by intrepid souls fleeing persecution in search of a better life in a nation forged in liberty’s name and dedicated to the equality for all.

In Latin America during the 70s and 80s, hundreds of thousands were tortured, killed and disappeared. (THEO VAN BOVEN ARCHIVE: It is inexplicable and indefensible for the United Nations not to react urgently to situations of gross violations of human rights). More cooperation required

US is leaning on European and Arab allies to provide more troops and support for the war against the Islamic State group, hoping that the horror of the Paris attacks will compel them to get more deeply involved.

The administration sees as the beginnings of battlefield momentum in Iraq and Syria. It may also reflect a sense in the Pentagon that the campaign against the Islamic State group has advanced too slowly and requires more urgent and decisive military moves.

Eric Clapton may need no introduction, unless you've been living in a cave. May I begin with this septuagenarian guitar hero strolling onstage and then putting his band through its paces in his unique brand of British blues?

Faculty Workplace Engagement

Gallup and Inside Higher Ed collaborated to measure employee engagement among college and university faculty members using Gallup’s employee engagement, or Q12, items. Inside Higher Ed supplemented these items with questions measuring satisfaction with certain aspects of jobs that are unique to faculty members. Some of the questions the study addresses include:

How do employee engagement levels compare among tenured versus nontenured faculty, part-time versus full-time faculty members, professors at private nonprofit versus public institutions, and by other demographic groups?

Young OLD MAN

Submitted by ub on

Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I’m a lot like you were.

Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there’s so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.

Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don’t get lost.
Like a coin that won’t get tossed
Rolling home to you.

Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.

Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.

To be safe than sorry

Article VI of the US Constitution states in part “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” Accordingly, President Obama has said that to have a religious test for Syrian refugees coming to the Unites States would be un-American. No one is proposing positions of high office for the refugees who our government defines as people fearing persecution on account of “race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group or political opinion.” So religion is clearly a component of the refugee test.

DAESH is the new ISIS

Submitted by ub on

According to Arabic translator Alice Guthrie, who explains in a previously published Free Word article... "There has been a concerted effort by several senior global politicians to give a new name to the group known as ISIS, or Islamic State, IS or ISIL. That new name is ‘Daesh’. If you've followed coverage of this attempted official linguistic sea change, you'll have gathered that the new name, although it’s just an Arabic acronym equivalent to the English 'ISIS', apparently mocks them, and thus drives them to threaten taking violent retribution on anyone who uses it.

Mexicans Leaving US

More Mexican immigrants have returned to Mexico from the U.S. than have migrated here since the end of the Great Recession, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis of newly available government data from both countries.

The same data sources also show the overall flow of Mexican immigrants between the two countries is at its smallest since the 1990s, mostly due to a drop in the number of Mexican immigrants coming to the U.S.
