A City Island, NY condominium complex, which is currently being built on 5 waterfront acres at the end of Fordham street on the sound has run into NY State scrutiny.

The project happens to be the first large-scale residential development on the 200+acre island in approximately 15 years. The sellout value for this residential project is estimated to be about $30 million.

This Week in History, Dec 7 - Dec 13

Dec 07, 1941
Pearl Harbor bombed. At 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, a Japanese dive bomber bearing the red symbol of the Rising Sun of Japan on its wings appears out of the clouds above the island of Oahu. A swarm of 360 Japanese warplanes followed, descending on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in a ferocious assault. The surprise attack struck a critical blow against the U.S. Pacific fleet and drew the United States irrevocably into World War II. With diplomatic negotiations with Japan breaking down, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his advisers knew that an imminent Japanese attack was probable, but nothing had been done to increase security at the important naval base at Pearl Harbor. It was Sunday morning, and many military personnel had been given passes to attend religious services off base. At 7:02 a.m., two radar operators spotted large groups of aircraft in flight toward the island from the north, but, with a flight of B-17s expected from the United States at the time, they were told to sound no alarm. Thus, the Japanese air assault came as a devastating surprise to the naval base.

John Lennon shot. John Lennon, a former member of the Beatles, the rock group that transformed popular music in the 1960s, is shot and killed by an obsessed fan in New York City. The 40-year-old artist was entering his luxury Manhattan apartment building when Mark David Chapman shot him four times at close range with a .38-caliber revolver. Lennon, bleeding profusely, was rushed to the hospital but died en route. Chapman had received an autograph from Lennon earlier in the day and voluntarily remained at the scene of the shooting until he was arrested by police. For a week, hundreds of bereaved fans kept a vigil outside the Dakota--Lennon's apartment building--and demonstrations of mourning were held around the world. John Lennon was one half of the singing-songwriting team that made the Beatles the most popular musical group of the 20th century. The other band leader was Paul McCartney, but the rest of the quartet--George Harrison and Ringo Starr--sometimes penned and sang their own songs as well. Hailing from Liverpool, England, and influenced by early American rock and roll, the Beatles took Britain by storm in 1963 with the single "Please Please Me." "Beatlemania" spread to the United States in 1964 with the release of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," followed by a sensational U.S. tour. With youth poised to break away from the culturally rigid landscape of the 1950s, the "Fab Four," with their exuberant music and good-natured rebellion, were the perfect catalyst for the shift.

Early in the afternoon of December 7, 1941, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his chief foreign policy aide, Harry Hopkins, were interrupted by a telephone call from Secretary of War Henry Stimson and told that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor. At about 5:00 p.m., following meetings with his military advisers, the President calmly and decisively dictated to his secretary, Grace Tully, a request to Congress for a declaration of war.

Typhoon Hagupit sent waves crashing through coastal communities ripped and apart homes all across the eastern Philippines, creating more misery for millions following a barrage of deadly disasters.

The typhoon roared in from the Pacific Ocean and crashed into remote fishing communities of Samar island with wind gusts of 130 miles an hour, according to local officials.

FLU Season Tips

Submitted by ub on

In the Northern hemisphere, winter is the time for flu, but the exact timing and duration of flu seasons vary.

While seasonal flu outbreaks can happen as early as October, most of the time flu activity peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May.

February is the peak month of flu activity with the highest percentage of respiratory specimens testing positive for influenza virus infection. During a 32-year period, flu activity most often peaked in February, followed by December, January and then March.

It's easy to eat your way to an alarmingly high cholesterol level. The reverse is true too changing what you eat can lower your cholesterol and improve the armada of fats floating through your bloodstream. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and "good fats" are all part of a heart-healthy diet. But some foods are particularly good at helping bring down cholesterol.

USA is no longer number one...

Submitted by ub on

USA is no longer the world's number one economy. Today it became number two and the country owes that to the leadership, or should we say the lack thereof. It is now official, the PRC aka China's economy has just passed USA aka America's economy to become the largest in the world. This is the first time since President Ulysses S. Grant that America is no longer the leading economic power on this planet.

Time For Reflection

US is the only country which still uses grand juries and these outcomes of recent weeks are not a trials, and compounds feelings of frustration, grief, dissatisfaction and anger. These grand jury decisions should not be the end, but only the beginning. Public safety officials, as well as our US Justice Department should initiate their internal investigations to dig deeper into circumstances.

As we reflect on the months leading up to these decisions and prepare a path forward, lets point out some facts. Each individual decidedly broke the law and attracted the attention of the police. Then tragically and inexplicably they decided to challenge and fight law enforcement. Our public safety culture needs to stop focusing on regional enforcement of minor infringements and start concentrating on the prevention of major crimes.

This nation was built on a proud and powerful tradition of expression through non-violent protest. Therefore, demonstrations and free speech are valuable contributions to debate, but violence and disorder are not only wrong, they're illegal.

Frustration is understandable, but centuries of racial profiling is not. If we continue working together, we can make a profound and lasting change in our global culture of that of law enforcement and the military to bring our multiracial community closer together. All people, regardless of their race and color care about justice. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
