Since Barack Obama was first elected, there have been over two million people deported from the United States. That’s more than were thrown out of this country under George W. Bush in his eight years and more than double the number during Bill Clinton’s presidency. It’s more than any president, ever.

Why? Perhaps President Obama wanted to prove to Congress that he was tough on immigration, hoping for comprehensive immigration reform. So far, that plan hasn’t worked out.

NY ELECTED OFFICIALS PUSH TO CUT PROPERTY TAXES

A couple of hundred elected officials in New York are pushing to cut property taxes, but not all are in favor. Where does your representative stand?

“Sky-high property taxes have been an unsustainable financial burden for working- and middle-class families in the Southern Tier and all across the State. We capped property taxes and now we have to cut them,” Governor Cuomo said. “Our tax reform proposal provides more than $1 billion in relief to those New Yorkers while also encouraging local governments to cut costs and share services in order to address the incredible tax rates that currently exist. This is an agenda that has attracted support from hundreds of local leaders across the State, who recognize the importance of increasing government’s efficiency and standing up for the taxpayer. I urge the legislature to join us by passing property tax reform this year.”

OBESITY IS SERIOUS

Obesity means having too much body fat. It is not the same as being overweight, which means weighing too much. A person may be overweight from extra muscle, bone, or water, as well as from having too much fat.

Both terms mean that a person's weight is higher than what is thought to be healthy for his or her height. The following are some of the causes, and risk factors

Taking in more calories than you burn can lead to obesity because the body stores unused calories as fat.

Obesity can be caused by:

Drinking too much alcohol

Constant stress whether from a traffic-choked daily commute, unhappy marriage, or heavy workload can have real physical effects on the body. It has been linked to a wide range of health issues, including mood, sleep, and appetite problems and heart disease.

IMMIGRATION REFORM

US Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus has signed a discharge petition to force House Republican leadership to allow a vote on comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

The discharge petition would force a vote on the House floor on H.R. 15, the bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, if 218 members of Congress sign on. A recent study by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that H.R. 15 would reduce the nation’s deficit by $900 billion.

CITY ISLAND WETLANDS

City Island consists of 230 acres, surrounded by the Long Island Sound and Eastchester Bay. Although a bridge connects this maritime oasis to the bustling Bronx, its tranquility is guarded by its closest neighbor and New York City’s largest park, Pelham Bay.

Hope for survivors of a Washington state landslide dims as the death toll rises as high as 24. Meanwhile rescuers covered in mud continue to search for survivors of a massive landslide in rural Washington state.

While the death toll is expected to increase, the future is bleak as rescue workers continue several days of searching through debris left behind after the landslide in Washington state.
