Winter has not officially arrived, but the snow has already visited US a couple of times.

The seasons are determined by shifting sunlight which is determined by how our planet orbits the Sun and the tilt of its axis.

The winter solstice, which is the beginning of winter is known as the darkest day of the year. It's when our Sun reaches its most southern point in the sky at local noon. After this date, the days start getting longer and the amount of daylight begins to grow.

Kansas authorities have arrested 58 year old Terry Loewen, an aviation technician from Wichita. He was allegedly plotting to blow up the Mid-Continent Airport in Wichita with a carload of explosives. He intended to die a martyr in the bombing.

Authorities said Loewen was believed to have been motivated, at least partly, by religious beliefs. Loewen was taken into custody early Friday, officials said, as he attempted to make his way onto airport property with what he thought were active explosives.

The Brooklyn Bridge will be closed to Manhattan-bound traffic from midnight Friday to 7 am Saturday, from midnight Saturday to 9 am Sunday, and from midnight Sunday to 6 am Monday. The eastbound BQE exit onto the bridge closes 30 minutes earlier, the northbound FDR Drive exits close up to an hour earlier, and all other Brooklyn ramps onto the bridge shut down 5-15 minutes earlier.
