NY ELECTED OFFICIALS PUSH TO CUT PROPERTY TAXES

A couple of hundred elected officials in New York are pushing to cut property taxes, but not all are in favor. Where does your representative stand?

“Sky-high property taxes have been an unsustainable financial burden for working- and middle-class families in the Southern Tier and all across the State. We capped property taxes and now we have to cut them,” Governor Cuomo said. “Our tax reform proposal provides more than $1 billion in relief to those New Yorkers while also encouraging local governments to cut costs and share services in order to address the incredible tax rates that currently exist. This is an agenda that has attracted support from hundreds of local leaders across the State, who recognize the importance of increasing government’s efficiency and standing up for the taxpayer. I urge the legislature to join us by passing property tax reform this year.”

IMMIGRATION REFORM

US Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx), Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus has signed a discharge petition to force House Republican leadership to allow a vote on comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

The discharge petition would force a vote on the House floor on H.R. 15, the bipartisan Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, if 218 members of Congress sign on. A recent study by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office concluded that H.R. 15 would reduce the nation’s deficit by $900 billion.

CITY ISLAND WETLANDS

Hope for survivors of a Washington state landslide dims as the death toll rises as high as 24. Meanwhile rescuers covered in mud continue to search for survivors of a massive landslide in rural Washington state.

While the death toll is expected to increase, the future is bleak as rescue workers continue several days of searching through debris left behind after the landslide in Washington state.

CITY ISLAND BRIDGE ISSUES AND ANSWERS

As preparations continue for the replacement of the old City Island Bridge and the construction of a new bridge, City Island Images found several trees have now been cut down along the park after a traffic signal was installed in same area and there are now plans to "temporarily" remove the military memorial island there.

City Island Images went to the American legion to inquire. Fred Ramftl, who works as a bartender there told us that the post commander was not available, but since Ramftl also serves as City Island Civic Association Vice President, he assured us he is well aware of DOT's plans to "temporarily" remove the memorial island located near the top of the bridge, adding that the construction project has stopped.

If this is truly the case, why were the trees cut down? Why has New York City Department of Transportation approved the installation of a traffic light in the area? Why is NYC DOT planning to close the bike and pedestrian path on the south side of the City Island Bridge to move the existing water main on the bridge?

Furthermore, this year's G8 summit won't be held in Sochi, Russia as previously planned. And also it won't include Russia at all.
