THANKSGIVING

Submitted by ub on

TIME TO BE THANKFUL

Be thankful that we don't already have
everything we desire. If we did, then
what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when we don't know everything,
for it gives us the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for those difficult times.
During these we can grow.

Be thankful for our limitations,
because they give us ample
opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for challenges,
because it will build our
strength and character.

Be thankful for all our mistakes.
They will teach us valuable lessons.

Public Safety on our Streets?

After a group of peaceful protesters were pepper-sprayed at close range at the University of California at Davis, one person in the crowd could be heard chanting, "Who do you serve? Who do you protect?"

Now, days after that campus police officer was captured on an amateur video spraying an orange mist onto a row of about 20 seated students, this appears to be a good opportunity to consider the following. How and why is it that there have been an alarming increase of shooting incidents? What are those individuals we pay to protect us doing? What can be done to prevent future incidents?

Living Wage Bill Hearing

Submitted by ub on

The "Fair Wages for New Yorkers" Act, which was introduced into the City Council at the behest of Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, would require developers that receive heavy taxpayer subsidies to pay their employees a "living wage."

"That "living wage," as defined by our bill, is a modest sum. What we are asking for is that employees at heavily subsidized projects earn $10 an hour with benefits, or $11.50 an hour without, as defined by federal law.

Seaport of The Bronx

Submitted by ub on

City Island is a little piece of New England in the northeastern most point of New York City. It is located in The Bronx on the Long Island Sound and is connected to the mainland by a small bridge. The island has a seafaring tradition dating back to the 18th century, with many of its inhabitants tracing their heritage back to those early days.

City Island hosts some of the finest seafood restaurants in New York City. On national holidays, these eateries are usually full of visitors who come to celebrate with their friends and familees.
