Summer = New Rochelle’s “BIG READ”.
Join the market festivities launching this annual NR Public Library community happening.

The seemingly enormous picket fence that Tom Sawyer tricked his friends into painting will be replicated on Library Green, and all are invited to join in the fun of painting it!

In conjunction with New Rochelle’s Big Read of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the New Rochelle Council on the Arts will host an "Arts Encounter" that is also a family-friendly party taking Tom’s task to a joyful level.. A long white fence will be installed so that children and adults of all ages can go to town, decorating it with a painted image, a favorite quote, or a bit of poetry that they have created—or participants can select from a supply of vintage New Rochelle scenes and Mark Twain quotes.
Materials and encouragement will be provided.

Live music by the Banjo Rascals from 11:00 am – 12:00 noon
and a performance by the Big Read Reader’s Theater Troupe will add to the festivities. If the weather is too windy or rainy, the performances will take place in the library’s Ossie Davis Theater.

Canna Lily Plant Sale supporting The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation
New Rochelleans Trish and Robert Pizzonia return to the market this year to sell their Canna Lily plants (grown by them right here in New Rochelle). All proceeds go to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, a foundation that funds research and family services for children with brain tumors. Robert is a former New Rochelle Fire Lieutenant and a member of Empire HOG – for Harley Owners Club, which also raises money for the foundation. We invited the club to display their Harleys one Saturday morning at the market.

Canna lilies, big and bold with tropical-like foliage and large flowers, offer long-lasting color in the garden. They are also low maintenance, easy to grow and last until the first frost. Stop by their stand and Trish and Robert will introduce you to the stunning world of canna lilies.
What a beautiful way to do good. And that’s what our market is all about!

For only the 12th time is history, a horse has won the Triple Crown, This time it was American Pharoah that took the mile and a half win at the Belmont to join an elite group of horses and jockeys, which can claim to be Triple Crowners.

This was the first career Belmont win for jockey Victor Espinoza, and the second for trainer Bob Baffert, who also won in New York with Point Given in 2001. This great jockey and fabulous horse broke the most famous dry spell in sports history over the past 37 years, This was first run in 1780.
