NEW YORK'S $555 MILLION BRIDGE

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced that a design-build team has been selected to replace the eastbound Kosciuszko Bridge carrying the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway over Newtown Creek between Brooklyn and Queens in New York City.

The team includes construction companies Skanska, an experienced design-build construction firm based in New York City, which will be managing partner; Ecco III of Yonkers; Kiewit of Nebraska; and HNTB of Kansas as the lead design firm. The $555 million project is the largest single contract the New York State Department of Transportation has ever undertaken.

CITY ISLAND BRIDGE PROJECT OPEN HOUSE

This is a community reminder about Project Open House. This is not a closed door hearing like the ones previously held. The meeting will take place TODAY May 29 from 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm. at P.S. 175, 200 City Island Ave.

DOT representatives and engineers will be on hand to receive comments and answer questions from the community related to the new design of the bridge.

NYC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The New York City International Film Festival will be showing movies from May 29th - June 5th.

Filmmakers from 27 countries will be in New York City to premiere over 77 films. The festival is sponsored by Peroni Italy and features a variety of events. Latino Film Day is back by popular demand and made possible by Made in NY. Festival highlights Include:

ITS A BIG FAT WORLD

Nearly one third of the people on earth are considered overweight. There is no country in the world where people have avoided obesity rates and the trend has been tracked for over thirty years.

There is a fat chance that either you, or someone you know is obese. In fact more than 2 billion people are now overweight. The highest overweight areas are found in the midsections of the body, so it goes to show that the top culprits are the Middle East and North Africa. Here nearly 60 percent of men and 65 percent of women are fatties.

American Poet Maya Angelou, author of 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,' dies at age 86.

M. Angelou was born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 4, 1928. Maya grew up in St. Louis and Stamps, Arkansas. She was an author, poet, historian, songwriter, playwright, dancer, stage and screen producer, director, performer, singer, and civil rights activist.

President Bill Clinton asked her to read a poem at his inauguration. It was the first poem read at an inauguration in 32 years.

EXPECTING MAJOR TRAFFIC

The following Bronx attractions are sure to cause plenty of traffic throughout the areas surrounding City Island and Orchard Beach. Many surrounding areas may be subject to closure by members of NYPD.

Wednesday, June 4th J-Lo aka Jeni from the block, or Jennifer from The Bronx will be performing at a music concert at Orchard Beach from 5-10P. According to event organizers, as many as 25,000 may be showing up to that Jennifer Lopez Fiesta.

100 YEARS OF THE BRONX

On this 100th Anniversary of The Bronx, the borough can boast a new Yankee stadium, officials are planning a huge ice-skating rink, promoting the construction of a new golf course and there is plenty of talk about a soccer stadium.

According to NY State, there are 1.6 million residents in The Bronx, who are financially lacking behind other NYC boroughs.

Taxpayers should ask President Ruben Diaz Jr. to clearly explain these decisions and ask who is actually benefiting from all of this? Food for though, now that the party is over.

VETERANS' ADVOCATE

On this Memorial Day, City Island Images wishes to pay special tribute to a local veteran who tirelessly volunteers much of his time to assist The NYC Mayors Office with providing dignified military burials to indigent veterans, who have family members.

James Mullarky serves as NY State Commander of the Catholic War Veterans and as an active veterans advocate, he actively lobbies government officials to fill out the paperwork so that deserving veterans may receive their distinguished service awards, although sometimes posthumously.
