Univision began in 1961 as Spanish International Communications Corp. (SICC), founded by Rene Anselmo, with the purchase of KWEX-TV in San Antonio, Texas. and Mexican Televisa mogul Emilio "El Tigre" Azcarraga. Decades later, I was recruited by Joaquin Blata and Jaime Davila during the reign of El Tigre. They were attempting to transform the Spanish International Network into a palace for Spanish-language news with one vision, looking forward and not catering to any political party or ideology. But that was then and this is how. Azcarraga's son appears to be changing the corporate structure. It has come a long way baby since he took over and has now rolled the dice on an indicted criminal defendant, a rapist, and a fraud.
Back in the 1970s, a lawsuit filed by minority SIN stockholders of Spanish International accused Rene Anselmo and Emilio Azcarraga of fraudulently making deals in which they profited through the U.S. programming company owned by these two toppers at the expense of the corporation’s shareholders. Their relationship allegedly stemmed from the association between the Azcarraga family, which controls the giant Televisa TV network in Mexico, and Anselmo, a U.S. citizen who was export manager for Azcarraga’s company in the early 1960s. That was strike one.
