UNITED NATIONS: President Donald Trump warned Iran at the U.N. that the United States could “annihilate” the Islamic Republic if diplomacy fails. Yet Trump also disclosed that U.S. and Iranian representatives held talks in New York and said another meeting is expected. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to address the General Assembly today.
U.N. / AI: Secretary-General António Guterres, in his final General Assembly address, called for international safeguards governing artificial intelligence, an end to wars and stronger global cooperation. He also urged continued efforts toward a two-state Israeli-Palestinian settlement.
UKRAINE: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine is prepared to halt attacks on Russian energy facilities if Moscow stops striking Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Russia and Ukraine exchanged deadly missile and drone attacks ahead of Zelenskyy's U.N. meetings with Trump.
U.S.-CHINA: Trump is preparing to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington as the world's two largest economies seek to manage disputes over trade, technology, artificial intelligence and Taiwan.
HEALTHCARE: The Trump administration says it plans to remove about 760,000 people from Affordable Care Act exchanges, alleging fraudulent or nonexistent enrollments. Officials estimate the move would save $2.2 billion in subsidies.
MEDIA: The Justice Department told a federal court that the president can restrict journalists' access to certain areas of the White House. CNN, MS NOW and Politico are challenging their exclusion in court. A hearing is scheduled Wednesday.
