BACK & FORWARD

Submitted by ub on

Way back then, a gallon of gas was less than thirty cents. The first pocket calculators wouldn't be available for a few years. We went to the bank, stood in line, and asked for our money. Long distance calls were timed and few could afford talking for 60 minutes so they thought twice before dialing those numbers. And there were only three broadcast networks and no cable or streaming.

The escalating Vietnam War, the rise of the Civil Rights movement, major cultural shifts, and iconic technological advancements—including the US space program and a newly minted science fiction series.

Space Exploration & Science

  • First Lunar Landing: The crew-less Soviet spacecraft Luna 9 made the first successful soft landing on the Moon, transmitting the first photographs from the lunar surface.
  • Surveyor 1: The U.S. Surveyor 1 spacecraft successfully soft-landed on the Moon, becoming the first American spacecraft to touch down on another celestial body.
  • Star Trek Debuts: The original Star Trek television series, created by Gene Roddenberry, premiered on NBC.

Civil Rights & Politics

  • Miranda Rights: The U.S. Supreme Court handed down the landmark Miranda v. Arizona decision, requiring police to inform suspects of their constitutional rights prior to questioning.
    • Black Panther Party: Huey Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in Oakland, California.
    • Global Leaders: Indira Gandhi became the Prime Minister of India. In the U.S., Robert C. Weaver was confirmed as the first Black cabinet member when he was appointed Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Music & Entertainment

  • The Beatles: The band released their landmark album Revolver. John Lennon also caused massive controversy in the US when he famously stated the group was "more popular than Jesus".
  • Other Iconic Albums: The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds, and Bob Dylan released his acclaimed double-album Blonde on Blonde.
  • Walt Disney Dies: Walt Disney, the pioneer of American animation and founder of the Disney empire, passed away at the age of 65.

Global & Historical Events

  • Vietnam War: U.S. involvement and troop deployments in Vietnam significantly accelerated during this year.
  • Cultural Revolution: Chairman Zedong Mao issued the "May 16 Notice," officially kicking off the Cultural Revolution in China.
  • World Cup: England won the FIFA World Cup, defeating West Germany 4-2 in the final to claim their first—and to date, only—major international football trophy.
  • Palomares Incident: A U.S. B-52 bomber collided with a tanker over Spain, accidentally dropping three live hydrogen bombs on land and one in the sea.
